How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site needs 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, Table D-1. Crews of 20 to 199 need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Crews of 200 or more need 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. Each standard porta potty counts as 1 seat and 1 urinal.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum | Standard units to rent |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 toilet | 1 |
| 21–40 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 | 1 (we suggest 2 for 30+) |
| 41–80 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 | 2 |
| 81–120 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 40 | 3 |
| 200 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 50 | 4 |
Worked example: A framing crew of 26 needs 1 unit by the OSHA table (26 ÷ 40 rounds up to 1). Our recommendation is 2 units, because 26 workers on 10-hour days fill one 60-gallon tank before the weekly service. The legal minimum and our advice are not the same thing; your safety officer decides.
What does a 28-day construction rental include?
A 28-day construction rental includes the unit, one weekly service, toilet paper, hand sanitizer and pickup at the end. Each service pumps the tank, scrubs the interior and restocks supplies. Billing renews every 28 days until you call for pickup, and billing stops on the pickup date.
- Delivery and pickup are a one-time charge on the first invoice.
- Extra service visits can be added for busy weeks.
- Moving a unit to another spot on the same site is quoted on the call.
- Hand-wash stations and units with sinks are available for concrete, drywall and paint crews.
Do residential remodels need a porta potty?
Many Jefferson City contractors require a porta potty on residential remodels so crews never use the homeowner's bathroom. Kitchen and bath remodels, roof replacements, additions and new builds usually run 2 weeks to 3 months. One standard unit in the driveway or side yard covers a typical 3- to 8-person crew.

Where should a job site porta potty go?
Put a job site porta potty on level ground within 15 feet of a spot a service truck can reach, away from crane swing paths and material drops. Keep it at least 10 feet from a building opening. OSHA requires toilets be readily available, so on large sites place units within a short walk of each work area.
Winter jobs need antifreeze service from December through February, when Jefferson City lows average 21 to 25°F. See winter porta potty care.
