How do you calculate porta potties for an event?

To calculate porta potties for an event, divide guests by 50 for each 4-hour block and round up. Multiply by the number of 4-hour blocks. Add 1 unit for every 5 when alcohol or a meal is served, at least 1. Make 5% accessible, at least 1, and add 1 hand-wash station per 4 toilets.

Event math: 1 unit per 50 guests per 4 hours, +1 per 5 units with alcohol or food. Job math: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. Accessible share: 2010 ADA Standards 213.2.

Worked examples for common Jefferson City events

A 50-guest birthday party for 4 hours needs 1 porta potty. A 100-guest graduation party for 4 hours with food needs 3. A 150-guest wedding for 5 hours with a bar needs 7. A 500-person festival for 8 hours with beer needs 24 toilets, 2 accessible, and 6 hand-wash stations.

How many porta potties does a job site need?

A job site needs 1 toilet for up to 20 workers, then 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. Above 200 workers it is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. Weekly service is assumed. Farm crews follow OSHA 1928.110: 1 toilet and 1 hand-wash facility per 20 workers within a quarter-mile walk.

See construction porta potty rental for crew examples.

Where do these numbers come from?

The job site numbers are the federal legal minimum in OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. The accessible share comes from the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, which require 5% of portable toilets per cluster to be accessible. The event ratio of 1 unit per 50 guests per 4 hours is a planning guideline we use, not a law.

Your venue, permit office or event insurer may require more. Confirm with them before you book; we will match whatever they require.

Keep planning:

Questions renters ask

Will two toilets be enough for about 100 guests at a four-hour event?

Two standard units cover 100 guests for 4 hours. Add a third if beer, wine or a full meal is served.

How many do we need for a half marathon?

Races need units at the start/finish and at aid stations. Plan 1 unit per 50 runners at the start for the hour before the gun, plus 1 to 2 units at each aid station.

Do kids count as guests?

Count every person on site, including kids, staff, vendors and the band.

Is one unit enough for a crew of 25?

One unit meets the OSHA minimum for 25 workers when serviced weekly, but most crews of 21 or more do better with 2 because the tank fills before the next service.
