What makes a porta potty wheelchair-accessible?
A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a ground-level floor with no step, a door frame 32 inches wide, interior grab bars, a self-closing door, and a 62-by-62-inch footprint. The extra floor area gives a wheelchair room to enter and turn. The seat sits 19 inches high.

Spec source: PolyJohn Comfort XL product page. The manufacturer calls it wheelchair-accessible. ADA compliance for your setup also depends on the path to the door and where it sits, so confirm with your venue or permit office.
How many accessible porta potties does an event need?
The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2 require at least 5% of portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, and never fewer than 1. A cluster of 1 to 20 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 21 to 40 units needs 2. Each accessible unit needs a 60-inch turning space inside.
| Units in the cluster | Accessible units required |
|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 2 |
| 41–60 | 3 |
| 61–80 | 4 |
This is the legal minimum. We recommend 1 accessible unit at every family event, even with one toilet, if any guest uses a walker or wheelchair.
Where should an accessible unit be placed?
Place an accessible porta potty on firm, level ground on an accessible route: pavement, packed gravel or short dry grass, with no curb or step at the door. Keep it within reach of parking and seating. Because it is 62 inches wide, it usually goes in a driveway or front yard, not through a side gate.
Questions renters ask
What's an ADA unit? Is that the bigger one you can put a wheelchair in?
That is the wheelchair-accessible unit: 62 by 62 inches, ground-level floor, grab bars and a 32-inch door. It is the bigger one built for a wheelchair to roll in and turn around.
Do you have handicap accessible units?
Wheelchair-accessible units are in stock most weeks, but they book out first on holiday weekends. Call (573) 257-9401 early and ask for one regular and one accessible unit if that fits your event.
How much is the wheelchair one?
A wheelchair-accessible unit starts at $250 for an event of up to 5 days, delivery included in Jefferson City, and $240 per 28 days for long rentals.
Can I get one regular and one accessible?
Mixed orders are common. One standard plus one accessible covers a 100-guest family event and meets the 1-unit minimum for an accessible toilet.
